Kenapa tiba-tiba, Thal?

Sebenarnya nggak tiba-tiba juga, sih. Mungkin bagi yang udah kenal aku cukup lama, pasti pada tahu kayak aslinya aku mahasiswa sastra (pemrograman). Like, really; siapa yang tekun belajar bahasa di jurusan ilmu komputer (sampai jadi poliglot, Alhamdulillah) dan ambil mata kuliah bahasa dari fakultas sebelah tapi sampai sekarang belum ada ketertarikan buat belajar NLP? 😅

Dulu tuh sebenarnya udah ada niatan double degree ilmu komputer (di universitas sekarang) sama sastra Inggris (di Universitas Terbuka); untungnya nggak jadi. 🙏

Kuliah satu gelar aja udah stres, cuy!

Jadinya dari awal masuk kuliah, aku cuma belajar bahasa secara mandiri (via Duolingo terutama). What kind of language, you might ask? Bahasa Jerman, Prancis, Arab, Spanyol, Polandia, Belanda, Arab, Rusia, Korea, Mandarin, Jepang, Italia … kalau masalah mencicipi bahasa emang banyak, hehe. 😅

Dulu sempat dua bulan kursus bahasa Prancis dan Jepang secara daring pas semester empat, terus sekarang lagi ambil mata kuliah bahasa Italia (yep, masuk jadi SKS mata kuliah pilihan) sama kursus bahasa Jepang untuk persiapan kerja.

Dilihat-lihat agak labil ya bund pilihan bahasanya, maapkeun.

Tapi sejujurnya, aku juga masih penasaran sama lingustik; sure, aku suka belajar bahasa, but it would be nice for me to get a grip about the science of language, which is linguistics. Sayangnya, sejauh ini belum ada aplikasi yang dapat mengajarkan ilmu linguistik secara ringan dan sangat kecil kemungkinan untuk mempelajari ilmu linguistik di luar lingkungan akademik.

Nah sekarang, aku baru kepikiran what if I design myself a learning path that resembles myself taking a minor in lingustics? What if I utilize online courses that relate to linguistics and try to get certificates from these courses? Daripada kepikiran dan kepo terus-menerus terus jadinya nyesel nggak nyoba, kan?

And I think it’s not a bad idea!

Aku bisa mengatur jadwal pembelajaran secara fleksibel dan aku bisa dapat kredibilitas dari kursus yang aku ambil. Walau aku tidak dapat mengonversi proses pembelajaran ini ke dalam sistem perkuliahan (kredit SKS), yang penting tetap never-ending learning; asik. 😎🤟

Perlu diingat kalau aku berusaha mempelajari ilmu lingustik murni tanpa adanya tendensi ke bahasa lain; jadi ini buka kayak “oh kamu belajar sastra bahasa tertentu, ya?” Tidak, bestie. 😁🙏

Acuan yang kamu pakai apa, Thal?

Setelah mencari-cari program Minor in Lingustics di Internet, aku akan mencoba untuk menciptakan learning path berdasarkan persyaratan dari beberapa universitas yang menawarkan program minor tersebut.

Maaf mager terjemahin, jadinya informasi yang aku dapat (baca: copas dari web mereka) pakai bahasa Inggris aja ya, hehe.

  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Department of Linguistics and Philosophy

    1. Undergraduate Minor Program

      The Minor Program in Linguistics consists of six subjects arranged in three levels of study, intended to provide students with breadth in the field of theoretical linguistics as a whole. The three levels are as follows:

      • Tier I

        One subject chosen from:

        • 24.900 Introduction to Linguistics (CI-H) [Units: 4-0-8]
        • 24.9000 How Language Works [Units: 4-0-8]

        note: 24.900 and 24.9000 are equivalent subjects; credit cannot be received for both.

      • Tier II

        Three subjects:

        • 24.914 Language Variation and Change [Units: 3-0-9]
        • 24.915 Linguistic Phonetics [Units: 3-0-9]

    2. Undergraduate HASS Concentration in Linguistics

      The requirements for a Concentration in Linguistics are the following:

      Three subjects, which must include:

      • 24.900 (Introduction to Linguistics) (CI-H) or 24.9000 (How Language Works)
      • one subject chosen from 24.901 (Phonology), 24.902 (Syntax), or 24.903 (Semantics) one other subject in linguistics (might include but not limited to the subjects listed above) As with all HASS concentrations, only HASS classes can fulfill the HASS concentration in linguistics.

  2. Stanford University - Minor in Linguistics for Undergraduate Students

    In order to complete the minor, you must complete at least 28 units of coursework in Linguistics and related fields, approved in advance by the undergraduate studies adviser. No more than two courses, neither of which is among the required courses, may be taken on a credit/no credit basis (CR/NC). The courses counting towards the minor must be units beyond those needed to satisfy your major course of study.

    Your plan should include:

    • Linguistics 1

    • One course each from two of the three areas below:

      • Phonetics and Phonology: 105/205A, 110
      • Morphology and Syntax: 116A, 121A, 121B
      • Semantics and Pragmatics: 130A/230A, 130B

    • Either 150 or 160 or, in advance consultation with the Linguistics undergraduate studies adviser, a course in historical linguistics or the history of a language

    • At least four other courses determined in advance consultation with the Linguistics undergraduate studies adviser. Students are encouraged to take at least one 200-level Linguistics course. Students may also choose to do independent work with a faculty member of their choice.

  3. Boston University - Minor in Linguistics

    The Linguistics minor consists of a total of six courses, chosen in consultation with an advisor: four core linguistics courses and two electives. Further information on individual courses can be found in the list of Linguistics course descriptions and on the Linguistics program website.

    Unless otherwise indicated, all required courses are 4-credit hours.

    1. Four required core courses

      • CAS LX 250 Introduction to Linguistics
      • CAS LX 301 Phonetics & Phonology: Introduction to Sound Systems (previously offered as CAS LX 510)
      • CAS LX 321 Syntax: Introduction to Sentential Structure (previously offered as CAS LX 522)
      • CAS LX 331 Semantics & Pragmatics: Introduction to Linguistic Meaning (previously offered as CAS LX 502)

    2. Two linguistics electives

      • Chosen from CAS LX 4-credit offerings at or above the 200 level (one of these may be a related course, with consent of advisor)

  4. University of Washington - Minor in Linguistics for Undergraduate Students

    The requirements for the Linguistics minor differ depending on your college:

    • Students in the College of Arts and Sciences
    • Students in the College of Education

    1. Students in the College of Arts and Sciences

      To declare a Linguistics minor, you must have at least sophomore standing (45 credits completed) and a declared major. There are no other admissions requirements to the Linguistics minor, although it is strongly recommended that you have taken or be enrolled in an introductory class in linguistics.

      Requirements for the Linguistics minor:

      • Introductory course in linguistics (5 credits): For details, see the Introductory Courses page.
      • Core courses (15 credits):
        • Three from (5 credits each):
          • Introduction to Linguistic Phonetics (LING 450)
          • Syntax I (LING 461)
          • Phonology I (LING 451)
          • Syntax II (LING 462)
          • Sociolinguistics I (LING 432)
          • Semantics I (LING 478)
          • Introduction to Morphology (LING 481)
        • It is highly recommended that two of the three courses be Introduction to Linguistic Phonetics (LING 450) and Syntax I (LING 461).
      • Elective courses (12 credits): Additional credits in linguistics or related fields. Six of the twelve credits must be upper division. For details, see the Elective Requirement section on the Linguistics major page.
      • Total credits: 32

    2. Students in the College of Education

      A secondary minor in Linguistics has also been approved by the College of Education for a Washington State teaching endorsement in a foreign language. A secondary minor is one open to both secondary and elementary level candidates. In addition to fulfilling the requirements for Arts and Sciences minors in Linguistics, you must also complete:

      • 15 credits of coursework at the 300 level (or higher) in a particular language (with at least a 2.0 grade in each course), as well as at least 5 credits in the history or culture of the speakers of that language;
      • One course in pedagogical methods for that language (completed with a 2.0 grade or better);
      • (For some languages) A proficiency examination in the language. Some language departments require a proficiency exam for a teaching endorsement for a minor in that language (sometimes in place of the 15 credits at the 300 level). With respect to the proficiency exam, a Linguistics minor is subject to the same requirements that a minor in a particular language is subject to.

      For more information, inquire at the College of Education Teacher Education Program or at the department that offers the language. The Linguistics undergraduate adviser can sign student applications for the Teacher Education program (under the minor department).

  5. The University of Kansas - Minor in Linguistics

    Students can graduate with one of the two Linguistics tracks - either the General Linguistics Track or the Second Language Acquisition Track.

Untuk saat ini, media pembelajaran yang aku gunakan adalah Coursera dan OCW MIT.

Kenapa Coursera? Kan berbayar?

Nggak juga, kok. 😉 Kamu dapat mengklaim financial aid di Coursera sampai 100% biaya kursus, nggak kayak MOOC sebelah yang ada financial aid tapi nggak bisa full aid atau bahkan nggak ada financial aid sama sekali.

Berikut adalah daftar kursus yang sedang atau sudah aku ambil.

  1. Miracles of Human Language: An Introduction to Linguistics (FINISHED)

    Kursus yang ditawarkan oleh Universiteit Leiden ini keren; materi perkenalan, fonologi, fonetik, morfologi, sintaks, pragmatik, semantik, bahasa di otak dan masyarakat diajarkan secara interaktif dan komprehensif. Menurutku, kursus ini bisa dibilang sebagai kursus all-in-one untuk seseorang yang belum pernah belajar linguistik (though I would explore more courses and reclarify this, hehe). Ada enam bahasa yang menjadi kasus uji untuk perbandingan sintaks dan semantik, yakni bahasa Basque, Mandarin, Tarifit Berber, Turki, Abruzzese, dan Gungbe. Pokoknya materinya menurutku udah keren banget.

    Tapi jujur, kuisnya cukup menantang dan ada tugas tambahan kalau mau dapat gelar honors. Aku sendiri belum tertarik untuk mengambil gelarnya, karena yang penting kelar dulu hehe.

  2. The Bilingual Brain (FINISHED)

    Kursus yang ditawarkan oleh University of Houston ini sangat menarik. Teori early language acquisition dan pemikiran kognitif yang dialami oleh pembicara bilingual dijelaskan secara bertahap. Video disusun secara sistematis dan durasi setiap video tidak terlalu lama, sehingga kursus bisa dipelajari dengan santai. Terdapat juga rekaman office hours yang memuat pertanyaan-pertanyaan dari forum dan dijawab oleh tim pengajar kursus. Kalau menurut mata kuliah di MIT, seharusnya kursus ini sudah mencakup Language Acquisition (walau aku rasa tidak semuanya dicover) dan The Linguistic Study of Bilingualism. 😆

  3. Introduction to Comparative Indo-European Linguistics

    Baru masuk wishlist (sudah enroll sih), soalnya belum mulai belajar dan masih menunggu jatah financial aid buat klaim (karena bisanya audit doang, ehe).

  1. Linguistic Diversity, What for?

    Topik multilingualisme kayaknya menarik untuk dipelajari, tapi aku mau prioritasin kursus yang udah masuk wishlist dan/atau yang lebih “sesuai” sama keinginan pribadi.

  2. Arizona State University TESOL Professional Certificate

    Kayaknya keren juga kalau aku belajar Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, jadi bisa belajar aspek pedagogi dari pembelajaran bahasa. Iya sih, ini bukan kursus yang super linguistik, but I think it would be cool to learn it to comprehend how human learns applied linguistic (English language, in this context).

    Kalau nggak mau versi Professional Certificate, ada juga versi Specialization-nya.

    Beruntungnya, MIT sangat dermawan untuk membagikan isi mata kuliah yang diajarkan melalui MIT OpenCourseWare.

      Terdapat dua versi dari konten mata kuliah di OCW, versi Fall 2012 dan versi Spring 2022.

    2. 24.901 Language and Its Structure I: Phonology

      Hanya terdapat satu versi di OCW, yaitu versi Fall 2010.

    3. 24.902 Language and Its Structure II: Syntax

      Terdapat dua versi dari konten mata kuliah di OCW, versi Fall 2003 dan versi Fall 2015.

    4. 24.903 Language and Its Structure III: Semantics and Pragmatics

      Hanya terdapat satu versi di OCW, yaitu versi Spring 2005.

    5. 9.59J Lab In Psycholinguistics

      Ternyata mata kuliah ini ekuivalen dengan 24.905J Psycholinguistics, hehe.

      Hanya terdapat satu versi di OCW, yaitu versi Spring 2017.

      Hanya terdapat satu versi di OCW, yaitu versi Fall 2012.

      Sepertinya mata kuliah ini merupakan mata kuliah topik khusus, karena topiknya berubah tiap semester.

    8. 24.914 Language Variation and Change

      Hanya terdapat satu versi di OCW, yaitu versi Spring 2019.

    9. 24.915 Linguistic Phonetics

      Hanya terdapat satu versi di OCW, yaitu versi Fall 2015.

    10. 24.917 ConLangs: How To Construct A Language

      BUSET INI MATA KULIAH KEREN BANGET T___T

      Hanya terdapat satu versi di OCW, yaitu versi Fall 2018.

Kayaknya Saylor Academy juga keren, tapi belum tahu sih kursusnya apakah fit dengan bidang linguistik; we’ll see later.

Penyetaraan dengan persyaratan program minornya bagaimana?

Aku menggunakan sistem penyetaraan kredit dari ITB (Credit Transfer, Course Registration, and Credit Equivalency) sebagai acuan jumlah kredit mata kuliah.

1. Untuk universitas di Asia Tenggara, Jepang dan Tiongkok, 1 kredit = 1 SKS. Di universitas-universitas ini, mirip dengan ITB, mahasiswa dapat mengambil hingga sekitar 20 SKS per semester.
2. Untuk universitas di Eropa, 1 ECTS = 2/3 (atau 0.67) SKS (1.5 ECTS = 1 SKS). Di universitas-universitas ini, mahasiswa biasanya dapat mengambil hingga sekitar 30 SKS (30 ECTS) per semester.
3. Untuk universitas di Korea Selatan, 1 SKS Korea setara dengan 5/3 (atau 1,67) ECTS (3 SKS Korea setara dengan 5 ECTS). Dengan kata lain, 1 SKS = 9/10 (atau 0,9) kredit Korea. Biasanya, jumlah maksimum kredit Korea yang dapat diambil oleh mahasiswa adalah 19 kredit (atau sekitar 21 SKS) per semester.
4. Untuk universitas di Amerika Serikat, Taiwan, dan Hong Kong, 1 SKS biasanya sama dengan 2 ECTS. Artinya, 1 SKS = 3/4 (atau 0,75) kredit AS / Taiwan.

Karena aku juga menggunakan kursus dari MIT, maka aku juga mengikuti skema kredit MIT yang berbeda dibandingkan universitas lainnya di Amerika Serikat.

Satu unit MIT kira-kira sama dengan 14 jam kerja per semester. Daftar mata kuliah menampilkan unit untuk setiap mata kuliah sebagai rangkaian tiga angka (misalnya, 3-2-7). Angka-angka tersebut jika dijumlahkan (3+2+7) akan menghasilkan total kredit untuk mata kuliah tersebut (12). Secara berurutan, ketiga angka tersebut mewakili:

- unit yang ditetapkan untuk kuliah dan pengajian.
- unit yang diberikan untuk laboratorium, desain, atau kerja lapangan.
- unit untuk persiapan di luar kelas.

Beberapa daftar mata kuliah berisi "unit yang disusun" dan bukan serangkaian angka. Ini menunjukkan bahwa Anda dan instruktur Anda telah menyetujui jumlah pekerjaan yang akan Anda lakukan dan telah menyesuaikan kreditnya.

Kami tidak dapat menawarkan konversi resmi unit MIT ke sistem kredit yang berbeda. Namun, kami menyarankan perhitungan berikut ini:

- Tiga unit MIT kira-kira sama dengan satu "jam semester" atau kredit.
- Mata kuliah MIT yang bernilai 12 unit setara dengan 4 jam semester atau kredit.

Aku juga menggunakan sistem konversi SKS dari program BYOC yang digunakan oleh universitas aku atas hasil kerja sama dengan Coursera.

Sebagai panduan pengakuan SKS, Anda dapat menggunakan perhitungan ini.

- 1 SKS = 170 menit x 14 minggu = 39.7 jam
- Contoh: Jika Anda mengikuti spesialisasi di Coursera yang terdiri dari 5 kursus dengan total 156 jam, maka prediksi SKS-nya adalah 156/39.7 = 4 SKS (pembulatan di atas 0.5)

Pagi ini (21 April 2023), aku ditanya oleh temanku (Hai, Azzam :3) apakah mungkin kita dapat mengerjakan soal-soal dari International Linguistics Olympiad setelah menyelesaikan kursus An Introduction to Linguistics dari Universiteit Leiden.

Hm, jujur baru pernah dengar IOL dan kayaknya seru.

Setelah aku coba baca problem set secara sekilas, kayaknya akan seru kalau aku coba mengerjakan soal-soal ini setelah aku merasa pengetahuanku di ilmu linguistik sudah cukup. 😋
